The court decided that the micro chip technology installed on the Apple iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus infringe the patent. Reuters
Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundatian, patent licensing part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said that the decision is important to keep their findings from unauthorized usage.
Previous jury decided that Apple incorporate micro chip technology that has been patented in the iPhone and iPad without asking permission.
Apple said they would appeal and declined to comment further.
The amount of compensation less than the required foundation. Initially they asked for $862 million or about Rp11 trillion.
Compensation less defined because the judge ruled that Apple did not intentionally infringe any patent.
Professor of computer science University of Wisconsin-Madison Gurindar Sohi, one of the inventors of the micro chip technology that is designed to encourage the employment of computer processors, is present in federal court in Madison, Wisconsin to hear the verdict.
"To Doctor Sohi, I hope you got the findings of recognition," said Judge William Conley.
'Important work'
Karl Gulbrandsen, managing director of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, said, "This is proof that hard work and the integrity of university researchers patent and licensing will the findings be protected. The jury recognized the importance of research about computer processor that takes place on our campus."
This case refers to the use of such technology in the iPhone 5s, 6, and 6 Plus - but there are additional demands on the same claims against Apple's two latest models, the 6S and 6S Plus filed.
University of Wisconsin also sue Intel over the same patents in 2008. The case was later agreed out of court but the amount of compensation was not announced.
Although there is a peace process between several major technology companies, patent war is still ongoing in courts around the world.
Recently, the judge rejected claims by specialist Nvidia graphics card that Samsung and other companies violated three patents them.
Apple's annual revenue reached $ 182 in 2014 Rp2400 trillion billion, or more. (bbc)
