"Initially we received reports that many houses were destroyed, power outages and fallen trees cover the main streets," said Alexander Pama, Director of the Board of Management and Disaster Risk Reduction.

In Manila, Lotta Sylwander of UNICEF told the BBC that the people in the areas most affected should be able to survive for 72 hours.
"During that time required for the typhoon passed, and at that time will be very difficult to come up with different types of transport," he said.
