Faced with the terrorist threat facing France, Paris decided to increase security around the city's great "iron lady". Next fall, the Eiffel Tower should be protected by a bullet-proof glass wall.

Temporary barriers already installed on the site of the most celebrated Parisian monument will now become permanent.

The glass wall will be bulletproof and will be about 2.5 meters high, according to the French newspaper "Le Parisien" which estimates the cost of the work at 20 million euros.

"It's a bulletproof fence that will encompass most of the Eiffel Tower's gardens," said Bernard Gaudillère, president of the Eiffel Tower Exploration Society.

Several political parties have expressed concern that the monument may become a fortress and security measures call into question the architectural aspects of the surrounding area, but the Paris House has already reassured them.

"All the security enhancement work of the Eiffel Tower is being done in partnership with the French Building Architects so that it can be inserted in the best possible way in the area," said Jean-François Martins, Mayor of the city.

The plan in which this security measure is included also foresees changes in pedestrian circulation around the tower, maintenance work and the reduction of waiting time for visitors. It should be implemented in its entirety within 15 years.

The project was approved by the House on the last day of January, before the French capital applied for host of the 2024 Summer Olympics and Expo 2025. | jornalnoticias
