At the event Galaxy Unpacked 2017 in New York, Samsung introduced a new generation of flagship smartphones - Galaxy S8 and a large Galaxy S8 +. In this year's lineup, the curved display becomes the standard, and thanks to the thin frames on all four sides it was possible to significantly increase the diagonal, while retaining the relatively compact dimensions of the case. Samsung also showed a docking station that turns the device into a desktop computer.
Edge-to-edge screen
As expected, the flagships are produced on two processors - the American version is equipped with the eight-core platform Snapdragon 835, and in the rest of the world we will have a version on the ex-Mi-core chipset Exynos 8895 of the company's own development. Chips are manufactured according to the most modern 10-nanometer process technology and are 20% more efficient than previous solutions. The amount of RAM is 4 GB, built-in - 64 GB with the ability to expand microSD cards.
The camera has improved
The main 12-megapixel camera Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 + practically does not protrude over the rest of the body. It uses the same sensor with Dual Pixel technology for fast phase focusing, in-situ and optical stabilization. The developers of the company have worked on the software, so the camera will shoot even better and run faster than in the Galaxy S7. The resolution of the front camera has grown to 8 megapixels, and in addition, autofocus has appeared.
Recognizes the owner in person
The most controversial element of the novelty design was the fingerprint scanner, located near the camera lens on the rear panel (by the way, still glass). But this is not the only way to safely unlock it. There is an iris scanner and a new face recognition system that works very fast, but we will check its reliability already with a closer acquaintance with the flagships.
Just ask
The new virtual assistant Bixby is tightly integrated into the system and works with standard applications. According to Samsung, everything that can be done on the smartphone screen should be available with voice control. The assistant can start video playback, send an e-mail and perform other actions. He is able to determine the text in the frame and read QR codes, similarly using a camera, you can recognize the thing of interest and find it (or something similar) in the online store. Functions in Samsung are called "augmented reality camera". For Bixby, a separate button on the case was selected, the bad news is that initially only English, Korean, Chinese and Spanish are available. The assistant can be integrated with third-party software, the main thing is that there are willing.
Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + are equipped with 3000 mAh and 3500 mAh batteries respectively, fast charging is declared (wireless or via a symmetrical USB Type-C port). There is an NFC-chip and technology MST for contactless payment for purchases in Samsung Pay. The housing is protected against water and dust according to IP68. 3.5-mm audroazem too left. Computer in smartphone
Along with the flagships, the company announced its analogue to the Continuum function in Windoes-smartphones. The proprietary docking station DeX allows you to display the image on a large screen and connect to the smartphone peripherals. The interface adapts to a large diagonal, applications run in windows with a variable size, and access to notifications is also provided. Samsung agreed to support the new mode in the package of Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud, but as will be with the rest of the applications - is unknown.
The price of the question
In the US, pre-order for Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + starts on March 30, and smartphones will go on sale on April 21. The preliminary prices are 750 and 850 dollars. There is a suspicion that in Europe will be more expensive.
