Otto Perez Molina, who has resigned as president of Guatemala, spent the first night in jail after a judge ordered his detention while hearing cases of corruption scandals running.



Perez Molina seemed to get an escort from a number of heavily armed police as he left the court in Guatemala City and headed a military prison in the capital of Guatemala.

After the 64-year-old announced his resignation as president, Vice President Alejandro Maldonado sworn in as ad-interim head of state.

Maldonado is expected to carry out the task until a new presidential election results constituted on 14 January 2016. In fact, he had occupied the post of vice president in mid-May, in order to fill the gap left Roxana Baldetti.

As Perez Molina, Baldetti caught bribery scandal. In fact, he was first imprisoned while waiting for the case to trial.

Perez Molina is accused of acting as an intellectual actor behind the efforts of embezzlement of millions of dollars of customs.

Prosecutors accused the president and a number of officials receiving rations of bribes paid businessmen who want to avoid the import tax.

Perez Molina denied he was involved.
