New York tightened security ahead of the US Independence Day

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, on Friday (3/7) ordered an increase in security measures throughout the country welcomed the celebration of the US Independence Day on July 4.


"We are well aware that the state of New York remains a prime target for terrorists," Cuomo said in a statement.

Department of Homeland Security and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a warning calling for governments and communities to remain alert to the possible threat called by ISIS for their sympathizers in the United States.

In New York City, the police deployed around 7.000 officers and almost all counterterrorism personnel to handle security in the event of independence.

"Responding to a warning by the federal government, the state of New York to take steps to improve the monitoring and management of communication with local and federal emergency and law enforcement during the holiday weekend," said Cuomo.

The US Department of Homeland Security will also increase the number of staff on Saturday at the 24-hour Emergency Operations Center and Monitoring Center of New York, which monitors events statewide.

Last week, the terror attacks in Tunisia, Kuwait and France pushed the US Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson issued a statement calling for increased vigilance during the US Independence Day holiday.

Separately, a spokesman for the US State Department John Kirby said in a statement that the diplomatic posts have been reminded to report a routine security review a few weeks before the holiday.

In Washington, nine security checkpoints will be set up to screen tens of thousands of visitors who will watch the fireworks on the National Mall. Coolers, backpacks and packages will be targeted inspection. (cnnindonesia)
