New York: A death row inmate who escaped from prison New York three weeks ago was shot and arrested by police on Sunday (28/06/2015).
David Sweat was arrested about three kilometers south of the Canadian border and was rushed to hospital for treatment. This inmates stable condition.
Sweat arrest put an end to the hunt in 1300 involving security forces since it was first held on June 6.
One other inmate, Richard Matt, was shot dead officer on Friday. Results of an autopsy showed he was shot three times in the head.
"The nightmare is finally over," said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told a number of media crews, as quoted by AFP.
Cuomo said that wearing a disguise Sweat was shot by an officer. A photo in some media show Sweat injured. US authorities worry Sweat intend to cross into Canada.
"He was almost up there, and we are very pleased to be caught," said Joseph d'Amico, one of the policemen. "The hunt for three weeks is quite tiring."
This second runaway prisoner, who cut the prison walls and steel pipes, touted inspired the Hollywood movie titled 'Shawshank Redemption.'
Both were reportedly seen in Allegany County, about 950 kilometers from Clinton County Correctional Institution, a few days after escaping.
Sweat was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of freely over the killing of a deputy sheriff in 2002. While Matt was sentenced to 25 years to life for kidnapping, murder and mutilation of his former boss in 1997. (Metrotvnews.com)
