History Today | 06/02/2015: Witness Live Munich Tragedy



One of Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton, being the only witness of life and the Manchester United players who survived the tragedy of Munich on February 6, 1958.



At that time a number of Manchester United players and members of the media were on the way back from a European Cup match in Beogard 1957-1958, Yugoslavia, against Red Star Belgrade, and is required to stop in Munich to refuel. When the snow begins to fall, the pilot, Captain James Thain, tried to take off for the third time for fear they would be late per the scheduled time.

Unfortunately, when the plane touched the mud at the end of the runway, the aircraft began to lose speed, making the aircraft can not take off. The plane crashed into a fence and past the end of the runway. A total of 21 of the 44 people who survived the incident, in which Sir Bobby become one of them. He suffered head injuries and groin due to pinched wreckage and had to undergo treatment for one week in the hospital.

As a Manchester United legend Sir Bobby has been featured as many as 604 and scored 199 goals. In England, he performed a total of 106 times and scored 49 goals, while successfully delivering England won the 1966 FIFA World Cup.
