Samsung can not sell Exynos processors because of the deal with Qualcomm

The Commission for the Protection of Fair Trade of South Korea announced that Qualcomm has banned Samsung Exynos processors to sell to third-party equipment manufacturers because of the old licensing deals. It took place in 1993, when the agreement was that the Samsung has been reached between the two companies could produce modem chips using some CDMA patents, but only for use in phones of its own production.

How does this agreement?

If Samsung or any other manufacturer will want to use Exynos processor in a device, they will have to pay a license fee Qualcomm. In 2013, the two companies held talks on the cancellation of the transaction and the alternative arrangements, but nowhere effectiveness are not led. Since then, third-party phone using Samsung processors, hardly appear on the market.

Qualcomm patents are standard, and therefore must be licensed on fair terms. Manufacturer chips violated this rule was punished Korean market regulators 865 million. Now the company is struggling with this decision in court, because it changes the Qualcomm licensing policy.

But there is a silver lining. Although the patent disputes, it would seem to inhibit the development of Samsung processor unit, in reality things are not so bad. For example, the last two generations of Snapdragon Qualcomm's produced not only, but also to the Korean company. Furthermore, Qualcomm's enabled Samsung first set in one of the variants of Galaxy S8 latest Snapdragon 835, which clearly gives the smartphone a competitive advantage.
