US university professor was shot dead

A gunman shot dead a college professor at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, United States.

Ethan Schmidt, who worked in the history department, was shot while in his office, Monday (15/09) local time.


Schmidt, an expert on the history of colonial and native Americans, was shot in his office in the building Jobe Hall, police said.

All campus buildings and then locked from the inside and people were asked to take shelter while police examine the situation on campus.

Noah beginning students Joyner, 18, said he was hiding in the bathroom in the dormitory during the incident.

"There were people banging on the door asking opened," he said. "Very terrible."

Shooting woman

The alleged shooter was Shannon Lamb, a professor of geography at the university.

Police said he was armed and dangerous, and driving a Dodge Charger.

They also connect the Lamb, 45, with the fatal shooting of a woman in a location as far as 300 miles from the university.

Amy Prentiss, 41, was found shot dead in his home in Gautier, Mississippi, a few hours earlier.

Shannon Lamb described as being sociable and was on leave for "personal reasons," said Don Mitchell, an English professor told Fox News.

He called Schmidt as "a gentleman in every action" and "a man dedicated to his family".
