In the Lonely Hour has been on the list of 10 most popular British album for 67 weeks in a row - it is the longest term of a debut album.
The album is perched on the list since its release in May 2014.
In the first week alone In the Lonely Hour scored sales of 101,000 copies.
The record was confirmed a day after the singer performed at the BBC Radio Theatre in London.
While appearing Sam Smith said it was the last time she sang songs from her first album directly and that the next appearance in the UK, she will sing songs from her second album.
"What can I say about this? I'm really moved and did not expect to achieve this accomplishment," said Sam Smith.
"I am forever grateful to my team but the most important is that I thank the British citizens who have realized this and bought my album.
"This moment is something that I will tell my grandchildren someday, maybe even to the great-grandchildren," said Sam Smith.
The previous record was held by Emeli Sande with her first album Our Version of Events.
Sande album was in the list of 10 most popular album for 66 weeks in a row that between February 2012 and May 2013.
Before Emeli, the record was held for nearly 50 years by The Beatles with their album Please Please Me (62 weeks). (bbc)
