More than 30 killed and 50 wounded in attack on Kabul hospital

In Afghanistan, more than 30 people have been killed in an attack on the main military hospital in the capital Kabul. There are also at least 50 wounded. The attack was claimed by IS. Armed men were dressed as doctors within the hospital and set up a shooting in there. Security forces were then landed on the roof for an hour-long firefight.


The attack began around 9 am local time at the Sardar Daud Hospital, with 400 beds the largest military hospital in Kabul. A man blew himself up at the entrance of the hospital.

Four others, armed with hand grenades and machine guns, succeeded in wearing a lab coat to reach the second and third floor and there point to a shooting. According to an employee of the hospital they shot at everyone: guards, doctors and patients.

There are at least 30 deaths. There are also more than 50 wounded. Almost all victims are doctors, nurses and patients. The attack was claimed by IS.

Hours firefight

Special forces of the Afghan army helicopters have dropped on the roof of the hospital. More than six hours after the start of the attack was the message of the Interior that the operation was terminated and that all the attackers were slain.

President Ashraf Ghani has strongly condemned the attack. "In all religions is that you do not get to a hospital. A hospital attacks is as much as all of Afghanistan attacks."
