Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Five people shot dead by Florida gunman



At least five people are dead and eight others are injured following an alleged shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport in Florida. The gunman is in custody and the motive for the attack is currently unknown. The incident is said to have taken place in Terminal 2, baggage claim, at around 12.55pm local time. Unconfirmed reports stated that police were looking for a second shooter, however the Broward County Sheriffs Office have since confirmed that the gunman was alone. According to local press, the shooter appeared to be a man in his 20s wearing a Star Wars T-shirt who was shot by police as he attempted to reload. Law enforcement sources identified the shooter as Esteban Santiago, a 26-year-old man born in New Jersey. The Sheriffs office stated that officers are currently going step-by-step through the airport before reopening. One image shows a man, who appears to have been shot. Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, who was travelling from the airport, said: ‘Shots have been fired and everyone is running’. Kristen Ando tweeted: ‘Literally just witnessed a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport. Thankful that I’m now safe in my hotel, thoughts go out to the victims.’ Details have not yet been confirmed by police. | Metro News
