More than 54,000 evacuated on Christmas Day after huge WWII bomb found in Germany



More than 54,000 people have been evacuated from their homes on Christmas Day after an unexploded RAF bomb from World War II was found in a German city. The huge 1.8 tonne bomb was discovered on a construction site meaning all residents withing a mile radius had to be evacuated including from the city’s Augsburger Vincentinum hospital. The ‘blockbuster’ bomb was the largest every dropped by the RAF and has led to Germany’s biggest evacuation since the Second World War. The evacuation began at 7am on Christmas Day and involved aroun 900 police officers Patients at Augsburger Vincentinum hospital, were all transferred to other hospitals will the bomb is diffused. Nearby schools and sports halls, as well as an exhibition centre, have been opened for those unable to stay with relatives or friends. The evacuation is expected to affect 32,000 households living within a one mile radius. Police vans were pictured driving all around the city giving out evacuation warnings as residents left their homes. The city’s medieval cathedral and City Hall are also set to be sealed off. It is not known how long the evacuation will be enforced. | Metro News
