Playing in the US Open semi-final against Italian tennis player Roberta Vinci, Williams lost three sets 6-2 3-6 4-6 on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Friday (11/9) local time. The world number one who also was aiming Calendar Grand Slam (win four grand slams in a year) it did many times unforced errors so it Vinci able to snatch victory and shocked the world.
After the match, Vinci himself said that the victory was "the best day of her life."
Williams Make Mistakes streak
Williams trailed 1-2 in the first set, but then go fast and did not give a figure anymore for Vinci and won the set with 6-2.
Different circumstances happened in the second set. After leading 2-1, Williams let it slack and Vinci to develop the game. The Italian did not waste the opportunity to get two breakpoint streak and made the score 2-4.
By relying on the services this severity, Williams was chasing 3-4, but Vinci regained the next games and make the numbers 3-5.
Relying on accurate forehand blows, Vinci is then able to win the second set 6-4. This is the first time for Vinci could win a set of Williams.
In the third set, Williams actually started well is getting breakpoint in the second games and make the score 2-0.
But Vinci did not want to give up and responded with a breakpoint and minimize it 2-1. When handling service, Vinci then equalized to 2-2.
Vinci then surprised all spectators who packed Arthur Ashe Stadium when he gets a breakpoint in the seventh game and winning the first time in the 3-4 position.
In subsequent games, Williams failed to convert two breakpoint to equalize so that Vinci was ahead 3-5.
Williams could reduce the position to be 4-5, but in the decider again made a mistake in a row so he surrendered 4-6.
In the final, will face compatriot Vinci, Flavia Pennetta, who surprisingly beat second seed, Simona Halep in straight sets 6-1 6-2 in just 59 minutes.
