Fragment of the oldest Koran in the world are found in the UK


A fragment of the world's oldest Koran likely have found the University of Birmingham. Radiocarbon dating showed the manuscript at least 1,370 years old, making it one of the oldest texts in the world.

Experts manuscripts from the British Library, Dr Muhammad Isa Waley, said, "exciting discovery" would make Muslims "rejoice". The manuscript was stored along with a collection of books and other documents the Middle East, without being identified as a fragment of the oldest Koran.

As reported by Kompas.com quoting BBC Indonesia, when a researcher observing the pages further, it was decided to perform radiocarbon dating test and produce a finding that very "shocking".

Director of special collections of the University of Birmingham, Susan Worrall, said the researchers "had no idea" that the Koran is the age old way. "Knowing we have a fragment of one of the world's oldest Koran is very encouraging, '' said Susan.

Trials to determine the age of a fragment of the Koran was done by radiocarbon acceleration unit at Oxford University. The trial results showed bits of it, which is written on sheepskin or goat and is one of the oldest fragments of the Koran in the world.

"This could bring us closer to the discovery of Islam," said David Thomas, professor of Christian studies and Islamic University of Birmingham.
