Indian civil servants fired after 'missing 24 years'

Government of India dismiss a civil servant, AK Verma, who took a leave of absence in 1990 and never returned to work.


The assurance was given by the Minister of Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu who oversees the Department of Public Works Center, where AK Verma should work. AK Verma worked as an electrical engineer and took off in 1990 after working for 10 years.

AK Verma superiors ordered him to return to work after the submission of extended leave is denied. It is unclear whether he will still receive a salary during the sabbatical. But only in 2007 the authorities dropped the charges for termination of employment.

According to M. Venkaiah Naidu, Verma has been investigated since 1992, but refused to cooperate. Correspondents say ditching work is a major problem in government agencies.

Schools are also experiencing the same problem because many teachers ditching.
Last year, public schools in Madhya Pradesh to fire a teacher who has been absent for 23 years in a 24-year career. Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to eradicate such practices when he took office last year.
