Bedraggled, wearing tattered old clothes and living rough in Rome, this is the girl that some have said they believe could be Madeleine McCann. The English-speaking girl, believed to be in her teens, was spotted walking the streets of Italy’s capital, but mystery surrounds who she might be. She refuses to accept cash and has been described as polite but unable to speak Italian. The girl responds to the name Maria, but she has given police different names. It is not, however, believed that she is Madeleine McCann – who would now be 13 – because she does not have the distinctive blemish on her eye. Pictures of her were posted to Missing Persons of America with many people throwing theories about who she might be. Lorena Kollobani, who highlighted her to the website, said: ‘I don’t know if she is even American. I’ve seen her in Rome streets. She sleeps outside and has mental problems I think. ‘But looks she hasn’t done this kind of life before because she doesn’t accept money and she is very careful and well behaved while eat (sic). I think she is a foreign student because she doesn’t know any Italian.’ The latest update on the website says: ‘The girl does not speak Italian. According to locals she is not very responsive and seems confused, traumatized or mentally ill. ‘We have reached out to the american embassy, non profits and local police, but no one is willing to go identify this girl…. ‘There is an Italian journalist who went to the girl but the girl was unresponsive so we are at square one. The Italian reporter said “she could be american or Eastern European. She surely isn’t Italian. She’s really scared and don’t like people”.’ | Metro News
