FOOTBALLERS IN FLIGHT TRAGEDY Plane crashes in Colombia with 81 people including Brazilian football team on board *** AT least six survivors have been rescued after a plane carrying Brazil’s Chapecoense Real football team crashed in a Colombia. Authorities have said they are hoping to find more survivors as the plane’s engine did not explode. Alan Ruschel, a defender on loan from Internacional, has been named as the first player to survive the crash. He was taken to hospital with injuries, as local emergency services are told to prepare for an influx of patients. There were 72 passengers and nine crew were on board when the plane crashed. Ambulances ferrying survivors to hospital can only get to within 30 minutes walk of the crash site. Rescuers on foot are having to stretcher survivors through fog which prevents them from seeing a few feet in front of them, local radio reported. They are then put into lorries and driven another 700 metres to the waiting ambulances. Some of the lorries are getting stuck in mud which is making the rescue more difficult. Witnesses said they have seen five people rescued so far. Hypothermia is another concern for those who have survived, as it is only five degrees Celsius. A local fireman who arrived in an ambul;ance has said there are "many survivors". The plane - a British Aerospace 146 short-haul aircraft - crashed at around 10.15pm local time in Cerro Gordo, La Union, according to Mi Oriente. It was travelling to José María Córdova International Airport in Rionegro, the second largest airport in Colombia. A statement from the airport said the plane declared an emergency after leaving Bolivia, before reporting "electrical failures". The plane started its journey in Sao Paulo, Brazil at 3.35pm local time and made a stop in Santa Cruz de le Sierra, Bolivia, before heading to Colombia. A post has been set up by the country's civil aviation authority at the airport. Medellin's mayor, Federico Gutierrez, said its possible there are survivors but described the crash as "a tragedy of huge proportions". It has not been confirmed what caused the plane to crash. | The Sun
