Today, Turkey celebratescelebrates both its independence and its nation's youth — the future of the Turkish Republic. Sovereignty and Children's Day is a week-long celebration filled with games, dances, and a very special tradition.
On this day, school children send their own elected representatives to the offices of government officials and civil services. The children's representatives replace the President, Prime Minister, cabinet officials and governors. The kids also sign executive orders concerning education, environmental policies, and other issues related to the world they will inherit.
But this day isn't just for Turkey. Over the past couple of years, children from all over the world have travelled as delegates, staying with local Turkish families. International Children's day has been embraced worldwide as an opportunity for kids to learn about different cultures and to consider the future of our world.
