Bones 'Mona Lisa' is found

Italian archaeologists have found bone fragments belonging to women is believed to be the model that became the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.



The researchers spent many years of lifting and testing of the bones in the town of Florence.

The remaining bones of the five-century-old known five centuries.

They said part of the leg bones most likely belonged to Lisa Gherardini, wife of Florentine merchant who allegedly became a model for da Vinci in 1503.

Reuters news agency reported, Silvano Vinceti, who heads the National Commission for the Promotion of History and Cultural Heritage said documentation about the location of the cemetery and scientific testing to make sure that they find the body of former Gherardini.

"If you ask me personally, I believe we have found the Mona Lisa," Vincenti said to reporters.

But another expert was more cautious, because the condition of the bones that make it difficult to take definitive conclusions.

The rest of the bones had been badly damaged making it difficult for the DNA analysis of the bones.

The scientists also found the skull belonged to the woman. (bbc)
