Singer Sandy Duperval's skin 'burned inside out' by TENS condition *** A woman’s skin was burned from the inside out after she contracted a rare, critical condition. Sandy Duperval, a 34-year-old singer from Toronto, has released photos from her life-changing ordeal in order to raise awareness of Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TENS). She has since made a full recovery, but it took five years for her health to return to normal. In December 2009, just before going on tour in Morocco, Sandy was prescribed the antibiotics sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim for 10 days. However, she had a reaction that caused a rash on her skin and mouth ulcers – so she went back to the hospital. She said her skin was ‘bubbling’ as the hours went by, adding that doctors believed she had a fatal form of herpes – and told her family she wouldn’t make it through the night. But after tracking down another specialist, Sandy underwent surgery that day and managed to pull through. After a tracheal intubation, Sandy was placed in an induced coma for three days. More than 90% of her body was burned, and the singer lost the skin on her lips, hands and feet. Her nails fell off and her mouth constantly bled. When she saw her face in the mirror, she said, she ‘cried like I had never cried before’. She said: ‘Recovering was hard but I was so grateful for being alive that it helped me through the process. Despite living with anxiety, I keep a positive mind and work on my emotions as they come. ‘Some days are harder than others, but I’m a fighter.’ | Metro News
