Thai film director denounces censorship

Thai film director told the BBC that he did not want his new film screened in the country because he had to censorship.



Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the award-winning Palme d'Or Cannes Film Festival in 2010 said the Thais did not have "actual freedom".

Thai military seized power in a coup last year and since then increased censorship in the country.

Weerasethakul told the BBC, Issariya Praithongyaem, that showed the film in Thailand would create more harm than good.

"Regardless of films produced, we do not want to show it to the audience Thailand because in the present circumstances we did not experience real freedom. I do not want to be part of a system in which the film director should censor themselves," he said.
