Racism in the US planes, Muslims were not given drinks cans

Washington - Discrimination, racism and Islamophobia still thick felt in the United States. One was experienced by a Muslim while in the United Airlines plane, as reported by CNN, Sunday (31/5).

At that time Tahera Ahmad, 31, was flying to Chicago from Washington for a dialogue between Palestinian and Israeli youth.

"We are not allowed to give unopened cans because it can be used as a weapon," said Tahera, mimicking the words of a flight attendant, as he says in his Facebook account.

Tahera then enlist the support of other passengers, asked about the attitude of the flight attendants. But the answer to the other passengers made it even more devastated.

"Because you're a Muslim, you should shut up!" said a female passenger, using harsh words.

Then a male passenger suddenly approached her, and said the words that no less rough. "Yes, you could use it as a weapon. So shut up," wrote Tahera, recounted.

The incident, plus the lack of support for him on the plane, make Tahera helpless and could only cry.

"I can only cry, because I think they would defend me. Some people just see," said Tahera.

This event sparked criticism and support from the users of social media. Even in the Twitter hashtag support appears to Tahera, which #unitedfortahera. Calls for boycotts United Airlines also arrive.

"I want to @united know that we were disgusted with this hatred," wrote Suhaib Webb, one of the priests in the United States in a Twitter account.


In a statement, a spokesman for United's Charles Hobart said that the airline regrets the incident. He also asserted that the United supports diversity and against discrimination.

Hobart also said it would meet with Tahera to discuss this issue. However Tahera says has not received any calls from United.

"This is not about United Airlines. It's about hatred and racism and the country is going through difficult times at present. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others have worked hard to ensure that Americans do not judge others based on the citizens of skin, religion or ethnicity, but it seems we are still experiencing, "said Tahera.

Tahera is one of the most influential Muslim figures in the US, according to Northwestern University. He has also been invited by President Obama in an iftar at the White House.
