Sydney, - Dozens of people are still being held hostage in a cafe in Sydney, Australia today. Local police said the perpetrator is a man armed standoff. But police did not mention the precise number of people hostage.
"I can confirm to you that there is an armed attacker in the building holding a number of hostages who can not mention the amount in the city, in the area of Martin Place," said Chief of Police of the State of New South Wales Andrew Scipione told a news conference as reported by News.com.au, Monday (12/15/2014).
He added that the police have not made contact with the man. Scipione was confirmed, the police could not confirm whether the incident was related to terrorism. "We have not confirmed whether they are events related to terrorism," said Scipione.
Lindt cafe, the location of the hostage is on the corner of Philip, in the Martin Place directly opposite the Channel Seven studios, a television station broadcast the highest rating, Sunrise and The Morning Show.
"We're dealing with a hostage situation in the presence of an armed attacker and we're handling this properly. We are ready to increase (response) if we need to do," said Scipione.
"We want this issue resolved in a peaceful way and we will do everything necessary to ensure that," he concluded.
